FATHER TIME: GORDON GOES FOR NINTH MARTINSVILLE CLOCK

jeff gordon 150October 29, 2015 – Jeff Gordon has to love his position in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup now.

He heads to Martinsville Speedway – arguably his best track – where a win automatically advances him to the Championship Round of the Chase at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Gordon is tied with Jimmie Johnson for the active wins lead at Martinsville with eight checkered flags – a total that is also his most at any track. The No. 24 Chevrolet driver boasts series bests in average finish (6.9), average running position (6.7) and average green flag speed (91.7 mph) at Martinsville.

Last season, Gordon finished second at Martinsville to Dale Earnhardt Jr., a race in which he led a race-high 130 laps.

Although he squeaked into the Chase on points and still doesn’t have a win, Gordon is building up some momentum in NASCAR’s playoffs. He placed in the top 10 of all three Contender Round races.

ENGINEER EXPERTISE FROM THE GARAGE AREA – ALBA COLON, PROGRAM MANAGER, NASCAR SPRINT CUP SERIES – CHEVROLET RACING:

Alba Colon

October 01, 2014 – “Congratulations to Jeff Gordon, Alan Gustafson, Rick Hendrick, the No. 24 crew, and everyone at Hendrick Motorsports on their win at Dover last week.  It was a great victory for Team Chevy.  Also, congratulations to Kevin Harvick, Jimmie Johnson, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Ryan Newman and Kasey Kahne, who along with Jeff Gordon, moved on to the ‘Contender’ round of the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup.

“This weekend we head to Kansas Speedway, the first race in the second stage of the playoffs; and a place where our Team Chevy drivers and teams are looking forward to having continued success.  The Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup is amazingly close; but with seven races remaining, we want to be sure that we place as many Chevrolet SS drivers in the top 4 as possible.  Also, the Manufacturers’ Championship is still far from being decided.  Our engineers are working hand in hand with the teams’ engineers to make sure they have all the necessary tools to be successful at each and every race remaining on the schedule.

“This marks our second visit to Kansas Speedway this year, and the teams have been able to build their set-up books.  We will be racing in the afternoon this time, but the 1.5-mile tri-oval is always a fun track. It is smooth and fast, with transitions from flatter straightaways to banked corners; and it has a lot of grip.  The racing on Sunday promises to be very interesting, and we are looking forward to a great race weekend at Kansas.”

TEAM CHEVY FROM THE DRIVER’S SEAT – CHASE CONTENDERS:

JEFF GORDON, NO. 24 DRIVE TO END HUNGER CHEVROLET SS – 2ND IN STANDINGS

(ON CONTENDER ROUND AND KANSAS): “The rounds will just get tougher and tougher. In this round, I think everyone hopes to get to Talladega without having to worry about posting a good finish since that race is very unpredictable and there’s the likelihood of a big wreck that could shake things up.

Jeff Gordon

“We won at Kansas earlier this year, so we’re excited about this weekend. We’d like to get another win to go ahead and clinch a spot in the Eliminator Round. But if we don’t, solid finishes this weekend and at Charlotte hopefully put us in a good position before Talladega.”

JIMMIE JOHNSON, NO. 48 LOWE’S CHEVROLET SS – 4TH IN STANDINGS

“Kansas can be kind of freaky because there is not much wear on the tire.  Strategy is going to be a big part of that.  Charlotte can kind of play that same role.  I certainly want to be victorious in one of the two so I don’t have to worry about Talladega.”

KEVIN HARVICK, NO. 4 BUDWEISER CHEVROLET SS – 5TH IN STANDINGS

“It’s definitely a little bit different just for the fact the (corner) entries are a little different than at most places. Turns 3 and 4 remind me of Turns 3 and 4 at Chicagoland Speedway, but there’s a lot more grip and a lot fresher asphalt than what Chicagoland has nowadays. It’s a very high-speed race track. You run the middle to the bottom of the race track. But I’m sure, as time goes on, that the groove will move back up. But, for right now, it’s very fast and very sensitive to your line and, with all the speed and how tricky the entrance is into Turn 1, you can miss your line easily. So, you have to be very specific about where you put your car and pay attention to what you’re doing.”

RYAN NEWMAN, NO. 31 CATERPILLAR CHEVROLET SS – 9TH IN STANDINGS

“Kansas Speedway and Charlotte Motor Speedway are going to be so important for us to do well in this segment because Talladega is going to be such a crap shoot. It sure would be nice to win Kansas or Charlotte to take Talladega totally out of the mix.”

DALE EARNHARDT, JR., NO. 88 DIET MOUNTAIN DEW CHEVROLET SS – 10TH IN STANDINGS

Dale Earnhardt, Jr.

“We have had fast cars all season but it hasn’t been a good couple of weeks. We are bringing the chassis that won both Poconos over the summer. So I’m looking forward to getting on track in Kansas and seeing what kind of speed we have.”

TEAM CHEVY FROM THE DRIVER’S SEAT – NON-CHASE CONTENDERS:

AJ ALLMENDINGER, NO. 47 CLOROX CHEVROLET SS – 13TH IN STANDINGS

“Kansas is a lot like the mile-and-a-half’s right now in general  – – really the repaves. You get there and on Friday and Saturday the track has a ton of speed in it. It’s really fast. You are not out of the throttle a lot. It makes it tough because you set your car up for those conditions. And, then Sunday – whether it’s cooler out or whatever – – just the track sitting there with the NASCAR Nationwide Series rubber from the race on Saturday. It just seems like when we drop the green on Sunday the track really gets slickened up and the repaves especially are bad for that. It makes it tough because on Friday and Saturday it’s all about speed. On Sunday, no matter what the conditions are especially if it’s sunny out and the track has set there all morning in the sun you drop the green and it’s just way different. It happened in Chicago (Chicagoland Speedway) as well. Still as cool it was all weekend, it’s just the way the repaves are in general. It makes it tough to set up for. It’s just a fun race track.”

KURT BUSCH, NO. 41 HAAS AUTOMATION CHEVROLET SS – 14TH IN STANDINGS

“The track is very smooth and it’s fast so you can be aggressive with shock control, sway bars and other things. Kansas is definitely its own animal but it compares more to a Michigan and the smoother race tracks that we run on versus the rough ones like Chicago and Atlanta. Kansas is unique in terms of how the wind changes direction from day to day. So, turn two might be a problem one day and turn four might be a problem the next day. I’m expecting that we’ll have high speeds like we had in the spring. The track will be fast. Cars will definitely be on edge.”

KYLE LARSON, NO. 42 TARGET CHEVROLET SS – 17TH IN STANDINGS

Danica Patrick

“The 42 team has grown quite a bit since the last time we raced at Kansas.  We had a pretty good weekend there in May and were really fast in the Target Chevy, but didn’t start off the race that great.  I think that given all the team has learned up to now, we should be in store for a better finish this time around.  I’m excited to keep up our momentum from the last few races, and am excited to be at a track this weekend that I think suits me.  All of us are still working hard to get that first win this season.”

JAMIE MCMURRAY, NO. 1 CESSNA/MONOPOLY CHEVROLET SS – 19TH IN STANDINGS

“I think that Kansas might have been the best race car that we had all season when we were there in the Spring.  We had a car with good speed and felt that we were capable of competing for a win.  Unfortunately we cut a tire and ended our night early.  Kansas Speedway is a lot like Chicago in many ways and we had a really good car there three weeks ago.  I hope that we can put our team in position to unload fast on Friday and continue that through the whole weekend.  It is always nice to go back to the Kansas City area too, because so much of my early racing career started with racing in that area”.

PAUL MENARD, NO. 27 QUAKER STATE/MENARDS CHEVROLET SS – 20TH IN STANDINGS

“Kansas has been a really good track for us since the repave the last couple of years and even before that actually. We really did not run well in the spring so I’m feeling anxious to get back there and try to improve on what we’ve done in the past and try to get back on track at Kansas. It’s been a good track, we just let ourselves down in the spring.”

AUSTIN DILLON, NO. 3 AMERICAN ETHANOL CHEVROLET SS – 21ST IN STANDINGS

“I’m really comfortable at Kansas Speedway. I’ve earned pole awards there in the NASCAR Nationwide Series and the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, and I feel like I’ve made quite a few laps there in both of those Series. I made my first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series start there. It’s a fun track and it’s getting even more fun as the surface wears in, following the repave.”

MARTIN TRUEX, JR., NO. 78 FURNITURE ROW CHEVROLET SS – 24TH IN STANDINGS

“We need to continue what we’ve been doing and even step it up a few more notches. We’ve had some decent finishes the past three weeks and right now our main focus is to find more speed and get this Furniture Row/Denver Mattress Chevrolet ready with more consistency for the 2015 season. It feels like we’re going through one of our better stretches of the season. I’ve had some good runs at Kansas over the years — a couple of second-place finishes and have led a bunch of laps. However, we weren’t that good at Kansas back in the spring, but that was then. We have learned a lot since the last Kansas race and  would be truly disappointed if we aren’t competitive on Sunday.”

CASEY MEARS, NO. 13 GEICO CHEVROLET SS – 25TH IN STANDINGS

“We had decent runs at Loudon and Dover, so after two good races we’re looking forward to getting the No. 13 GEICO Chevrolet SS to Kansas and continuing the effort to build our intermediate program. We’ve struggled on these tracks in the past, but seem to be doing better on some of them this season. The Germain Racing team is always working hard to advance our program and I think you’re seeing that this season.”

DANICA PATRICK, NO. 10 ASPEN DENTAL CHEVROLET SS – 28TH IN STANDINGS

“Honestly, the most rewarding part of my night was probably when I drove around the outside of the No. 48 (Jimmie Johnson) on a restart. That was probably my most rewarding thing all night. I say that with all the respect in the world. It’s a big deal because he is Jimmie Johnson. Aside from that, I was really just overall proud that we stayed up front all night. That was the biggest thing. When the race started, it was about finishing the weekend off right and just staying up there. You know you’re going to go up, you’re going to go down a little bit, and we sure enough did that. But we more than held our own through the whole race. I’m extremely proud of this crew for building a car that was just awesome. It was so good on restarts and long runs and tires getting old. Hard work pays off and they definitely put the hard work into it.

“(Tony) Gibson (crew chief) did a good job in making changes for the race and it was good from the get-go. And I think what says even more are two things: It was really good on restarts and it was really good when it wasn’t quite right, and it was really good on long runs. But, overall, I’m just proud for the team. Kevin (Harvick) has been a great teammate in helping me out and obviously he was very fast at Kansas.”

JUSTIN ALLGAIER, NO. 51 BRANDT PROFESSIONAL AGRICULTURE CHEVROLET SS – 29TH IN STANDINGS

“I would normally say that I’m looking forward to Kansas [Speedway], but unfortunately I just haven’t had good luck there in the Sprint Cup Series. I’ve been in accidents in the two Sprint Cup races I’ve ran there. Hopefully, we can build some momentum this weekend in the BRANDT Chevy.”

MICHAEL ANNETT, NO. 7 ACCELL CONSTRUCTION HQ CHEVROLET SS – 31ST IN STANDINGS

“We’ve had some extra time at Kansas this year, having participated in the tire test right before the spring race. Our mile-and-a-half program has gotten to the point where we’re a top-20 car. We finished 18th at Kentucky and 21st at Atlanta. I feel like we can continue to improve on that this weekend.”

NASCAR CHASE GRID TRIMMED TO 12 DRIVERS

Dale Earnhardt Jr. currently holds the track record for most consecutive wins

Talk Already Buzzing about Elimination Race of Contender Round -Talladega Superspeedway’s GEICO 500

TALLADEGA, AL – September 30, 2014 – It’s now down to 12 Contenders in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup, but the talk has already begun about the most anticipated and unpredictable race – Talladega Superspeedway’s GEICO 500 on October 19.

Talladega will be filled with high intensity, pressure and anguish like never before as the field of eligible drivers for the title will dwindle to eight at the conclusion of the GEICO 500. There will be a sense of urgency that is unlike any other to get to the front and avoid the “Big One”, and the drivers’ thinking is in fast-forward.

“That place is going to be a crazy”, said Brad Keselowski of Talladega Superspeedway, site of his first career NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) triumph in 2009. “There’s going to be a lot of guys on the bubble, and it’s probably all going to change on the last lap of the last corner.”

After Sunday’s race at Dover International Speedway, the final event of the Challenger Round, Keselowski, Joey Logano, Kevin Harvick, Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon (winner at Dover) advanced to the round of 12, along with Kyle Busch, Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Matt Kenseth, Ryan Newman, Carl Edwards, Denny Hamlin and Kasey Kahne. Kurt Busch, A.J. Allmendinger, Greg Biffle, and Aric Almirola were eliminated.

Johnson, who won one of Talladega’s closest races in history by .002 second in 2011, says he hopes to be comfortably high in the standings image002 (1)when he returns for the GEICO 500.

“Talladega is definitely the wild card,” admits the two-time ‘Dega winner. “If I am one of the guys that wins at Charlotte or Kansas (first two races of the Contender Round), it’s sure going to make the race at Talladega fun. Otherwise, you’re just going to be on pins and needles and stressing like crazy. That’s the strategy; really try to win one of those first two so you can go to Talladega, pull them (belts) tight and let it rip.”

In addition to Keselowski and Johnson, six of the remaining 12 Chase Contenders have seen victories at NASCAR’s Most Competitive Track. The other four, however, have had solid finishes at Talladega’s 2.66 mile oval. Below, in order of the Chase Standings, are their highlights at Talladega Superspeedway:

Keselowski got his first taste of success in NASCAR with his first career triumph at Talladega Superspeedway in 2009 and added his second win 12 Freds 250 Powered by Coca-Cola_C 200in 2012. Keselowski also has NASCAR a Nationwide win and three NSCS top-five finishes.

While he hasn’t won a NSCS race at TSS, Joey Logano has one NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) victory, five NNS top-five finishes and two NSCS top-five finishes. In May, he led the Aaron’s 499 four times for 25 laps.

Kevin Harvick has one NSCS win, six top-five finishes and 11 top-10 finishes.

Johnson has two wins, six top-five finishes, 10 top-10 finishes, one pole and an average finish of 17.2 in 25 starts.

Jeff Gordon, active win leader at TSS, has a total of six victories at Talladega including a sweep in 2007. He has earned 15 top-five finishes.

FOODGIANT QUALIFYING CKyle Busch has one NSCS victory at Talladega Superspeedway, in April 2008. He has four top-five NSCS finishes, as well as triumphs in two fred’s 250 Powered By Coca-Cola NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) races, and has gone to Gatorade Victory Lane once in the NASCAR NNS.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. currently holds the track record for most consecutive wins, going to Gatorade Victory Lane four straight races from 2001-2003. Talladega Superspeedway is his best Chase Track, with five total wins, 10 top-five finishes, 14 top-10 finishes and an average finish of 15.0 in 29 starts.

Matt Kenseth has one win at Talladega, in October 2012. He has four top-five finishes and 9 top-10 finishes.

Ryan Newman has four top-five finishes, nine top-10 finishes and an average finish of 21.5 in 25 starts.

Carl Edwards hasn’t won at Talladega but has been close on several occasions. He has two top-five finishes, five top-10 finishes and an average finish of 21.0 in 20 starts.

Denny Hamlin won May’s Aaron’s 499 and also has three top-five finishes.

Kasey Kahne has a pair of runner-up finishes (2006, 2009), along with four top-10 results.

CHEVROLET SS DRIVERS AND TEAMS LOOK TO TAME THE ‘MONSTER’

‘Challenger’ round Finale Set to Eliminate Four Drivers from Chase Contention at Dover

DETROIT – September 24, 2014 – This weekend’s 400-lap/400-mile AAA 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Dover International Speedway is always exciting for Team Chevy. The 1.0-mile track known as the ‘Monster Mile’ is a concrete oval that provides many unique the-monster- 550mile-doverchallenges for drivers and teams.  The self-cleaning, high-banked track makes it difficult to avoid mayhem and one small mistake can lead to a disastrous day.

The racing on Sunday will be even more intense because it is the final of three races in the ‘Challenger’ round, the first elimination for the Chase for the Sprint Cup.  The current Chase contender field will be reduced from 16 to 12 when the checkered flag flies at Dover.  The eight Chevrolet SS chasers are all anxious to transfer to the next segment and continue their individual quests for the championship.

The Monster Mile has been a successful 1.0-mile oval for Team Chevy with Chevrolet SS being victorious four out of the last five races at Dover.  Six-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson has had the most success at this track with nine trophies to his credit.

Solid strategy and fast cars will be key for drivers and teams as they deal with predicted warm temperatures which could lead to a slick race track.  For the second week in a row qualifying will be of up most importance in order to get good pit selection on pit road to give the driver a small advantage over the tight competition.

All the action is scheduled to begin Sunday September 28th at 2:00 p.m. ET. Live coverage will be available on ESPN, MRN, Sirius NASCAR Radio Channel 90 and NASCAR.com.

ENGINEER EXPERTISE FROM THE GARAGE AREA – PAT SUHY, MANAGER, CHEVROLET RACING – NASCAR GROUP MANAGER:

Pat Suhy

“Congratulations to last weekend’s Team Chevy winners!  It’s always nice to add another driver to the long list of drivers who got their first win in a Chevy, and Cole Custer did a great job in the Camping World Truck Series race at NHMS to add his name to that list.  In the Nationwide Series race in Kentucky, Brendan Gaughan led a trio of Richard Childress Racing Camaros across line and captured Chevrolet’s 15th win of the season in that series.

“Looking ahead to this coming weekend’s triple header at Dover International Speedway, the big story will be that it’s the final race of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Chase for the Championship ‘Challenger’ round’ of 16.  Chevy has several drivers well positioned to advance into the ‘Contender’ round of 12.

“This concrete one-mile track is challenging enough without the pressure of being a cutoff race within the Chase.  With the added pressure to perform, for some teams it will be interesting to see how the race unfolds.  With the combined efforts of our teams, engineering staffs, and our Team Chevy engineering group, preparations have been made to have the fastest cars possible heading into the weekend.

“Combining fast cars with strategies developed by the talented lineup of Chevy crew chiefs, along with great execution on the track by drivers and pit crews, should lead to some exciting racing and great results for Team Chevy.”

TEAM CHEVY FROM THE DRIVER’S SEAT – CHASE CONTENDERS: KEVIN HARVICK, NO. 4 BUDWEISER CHEVROLET SS – 3RD IN STANDINGS

“Dover is definitely one of the most taxing places that we go to for sure. There are just a lot of g-forces as you go off into the corner and it kind of throws you down into a hole. There’s a lot of banking with a lot of speed and it’s hard on your body. I usually leave out of there with sore heels from where my feet have beat on the floorboard through the day. It’s definitely a very taxing race track for a driver.”

JIMMIE JOHNSON, NO. 48 LOWE’S/KOBALT TOOLS CHEVROLET SS – 4TH IN STANDINGS

“I love Dover. It’s one of the best tracks for this Lowe’s/Kobalt team.  I think it goes back to my off-road days, this track just suits my driving style. It’s good to have the going into this race, especially since it’s a cut-off race, but it doesn’t guarantee us anything going back. It makes the week leading into it feel a little bit better. It gives us some talking points and places to look at and focus on, but we still have to show up there and get the job done.”

DALE EARNHARDT, JR., NO. 88 NATIONAL GUARD CHEVROLET SS – 6TH IN STANDINGS

“We run well at Dover. I know everybody is looking at us like we are falling off a little bit, but Chicago hadn’t been a great track for us and New Hampshire hadn’t either. Dover has. So I will be surprised if we don’t go there and be competitive. We were racing for a win there last year and ran pretty good there earlier this year. I look forward to going and having a good car. Dover is not a track where we practice well.  I just have to keep that in mind while we are out there practicing and not get too distraught because we race pretty well there.”

JEFF GORDON, NO. 24 DRIVE TO END HUNGER CHEVROLET SS – 7TH IN STANDINGS

“We had a good car last weekend at New Hampshire, but we didn’t get the finish we had hoped for because of the cut tire and damage after hitting the wall. Instead of going into Dover with a good cushion, we have to go there and perform at a high level like we’ve been doing all year to make it to the next round.”

AJ ALLMENDINGER, NO. 47 HUNGRY JACK/ACME CHEVROLET SS – 10TH IN STANDINGS

“I feel fortunate about being 10th in the points heading into Dover. We haven’t been at our best to be in that position. Last week at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, was a good fight out of the team. We fought hard all day. Honestly, 13th was disappointing because we ran better at the end of the race and it didn’t play out. Going into this weekend, I would say that I am not trying to think about it and have all that pressure of advancing to the Contender Round. Things aren’t different for us this weekend. My goal would be no different than if we were 20-something in the points. We just have to have a solid weekend. We haven’t put together a good weekend from start to finish in a while. We have pieced it together and at times have had a good result. Sometimes the first part of weekend is good and the second is not. We need a good overall weekend. I don’t care what’s going around me and where Ryan (Newman) or Greg (Biffle) or any of those guys are.  If we handle our business like we are capable of, we should be in.”

RYAN NEWMAN, NO. 31 QUICKEN LOANS “DESIGN A SCHEME” CHEVROLET SS – 12TH IN STANDINGS

“This obviously is going to be a very important race for a lot of us, including the No. 31 Quicken Loans team. The first two events have not played out as we have hoped. We’re sitting tied with Kasey Kahne in 11th with just six points separating us from the current cutoff spot. With that said, we’re only two points from eighth and 22 out of fifth. It’s close. For us to transfer into the Contender 12 Round, we are going to have to be on top of our game. No mistakes. Dover is a very demanding track but it is usually a track where once we get our car handling right, it stays right because of the concrete. We shouldn’t see the big transition of balance and grip that can really change your day. But if we cannot get the Quicken Loans car to handle, Dover is one of the most frustrating places to race. It’s like a bigger version of Bristol. If you spend the majority of your day looking in the rearview mirror more than the windshield, you are going to have a long day. There is no doubt, Dover is going to be an exciting race to watch and I believe we will have a car capable of contending not only for a transfer spot but a race win. It’s a track I know how to win on, and I’m going to do everything I can to make sure our bid for a championship continues.”

KURT BUSCH, NO. 41 HAAS AUTOMATION CHEVROLET SS – 15TH IN STANDINGS

“It’s called the Monster Mile for a reason – the track can chew up cars and spit them out. And it’s because of the tough transitions into the corners with the high banking and even the high-banked straightaways. It’s tough to do that sharp of a turn on a mile racetrack. It’s like you literally jump down into the corner and then jump back up out of the corner onto the straightaway, and so those points of the track are the toughest part – the transition from straightaway to corner. It’s a fun track to drive. You’re always on that edge and, when you’re fast there, it feels extra fast because of how close you have to cut it on corner exit and not hit the wall.”

TEAM CHEVY FROM THE DRIVER’S SEAT – NON-CHASE CONTENDERS: KYLE LARSON, NO. 42 TARGET CHEVROLET SS – 17TH IN STANDINGS

“My team is looking forward to continuing this late-season momentum this weekend at Dover.  As we’ve shown for the past several races, our team is continuing to get stronger and has been really good at overcoming obstacles that pop up at the track.  Both of the Ganassi cars have been fast, and I think we should have a really good Target Chevy to race this weekend.  I thought our race there earlier was pretty good, even though we gave some spots back over the course of the race.  We’ll just look to qualify well and keep the car up front during the race.  Me and my Target team are still racing hard for a win this season.”

JAMIE MCMURRAY, NO. 1 MCDONALD’S CHEVROLET SS – 18TH IN STANDINGS

“I’m looking forward to heading to Dover this week.  Not only because it is a fun track to race, but also from the standpoint of our team has really been on a roll of late.  We have really put together some great runs the last few weeks and I feel like we are as good as we have been all year.  We had a good car the first race at Dover and ended up hitting a big chunk of the race track that came apart.  Even with all the damage we were able to overcome and have strong finish.  This is one of the tracks where things happen so fast, we will just need to focus on track position and have our McDonald’s Chevy poised to hopefully continue our string of top-10 finishes from the last three weeks.”

AUSTIN DILLON, NO. 3 DOW CHEVROLET SS – 20TH IN STANDINGS

“I really like Dover International Speedway because of the physical aspect of the track. You have to muscle your way around that place. With a good car, you can really string out over a long run and gain and pass people. It’s a fast track. It’s a place that aggressive drivers like.”

PAUL MENARD, NO. 27 CERTAINTEED/MENARDS CHEVROLET SS – 21ST IN STANDINGS

“Dover is probably one of the top two or three tracks where you can get a great sensation for speed. There are elevation changes when you drive off into the corner then you drive back up the hill on exit. The tires will fall off a fair amount which means you can move around a lot. It just basically means there are two different ways you can drive at Dover and you can move your car around a little bit to try and compensate for what it’s doing. It’s an exciting track.”

MARTIN TRUEX, JR., NO. 78 FURNITURE ROW CHEVROLET SS – 24TH IN STANDINGS

“I’ve said it many times that I like the speed at Dover. Of all the tracks we go to Dover probably feels the fastest to drive on and I like that. The speed can be pretty scary at times. Dover is closest to home (Mayetta, N.J.) and I have more fans and family at the race than any other track we go to. Honestly our car wasn’t that good back in June but we fought through and finished 6th. For some reason if we can get the car close to a good setup, I can keep it up front at Dover. I don’t know why that is. Maybe it’s home track advantage.”

CASEY MEARS, NO. 13 GEICO CHEVROLET SS – 25TH IN STANDINGS

“Dover is always a fun place for us to go because GEICO’s corporate office is only about 100-miles away. Our Germain Racing team will also be going on a C-17 orientation flight at Dover Air Force Base this week, so everyone’s looking forward to the experience. We’ll have about 20 people from the Air Force base joining us at the race on Sunday, so it will be nice to spend time with the folks that serve in our country’s military. The chaseo logNo. 13 GEICO Chevrolet SS was good there in the spring race before that block of concrete knocked a hole in our grill, which affected our downforce and slowed us down. Hopefully, that’s an issue we will not have to deal with this trip.”

DANICA PATRICK, NO. 10 GODADDY CHEVROLET SS – 28TH IN STANDINGS

“I always like going to Dover. The track is pretty fun. I remember everyone telling me how unique and challenging Dover was prior to my first race. At the time, I didn’t have a whole lot to compare that track to. They said it was like a larger version of Bristol, but I hadn’t raced at Bristol yet, either. It’s nice to have more of a handle on what to expect heading in there now. Dover is fun. It’s fast and it can make for a really long day of racing. I think that’s part of the appeal of it – how demanding it can be. We definitely want to stay out of trouble, which is easier said than done at these types of tracks.”

JUSTIN ALLGAIER, NO. 51 BRANDT PROFESSIONAL AGRICULTURE CHEVROLET SS – 29TH IN STANDINGS

“Dover [International Speedway] has always been a more difficult track for me. I think it’s definitely one of the more difficult tracks for most drivers. One small slip on the track and you find yourself in a bad position really quick. I struggled there a little bit earlier this year, but I feel like Steve [Addington] and the guys have come up with a good plan for us this weekend.”

MICHAEL ANNETT, NO. 7 CYPRESS HQ CHEVROLET SS – 31ST IN STANDINGS

“Last time out at Dover, we were running in the top 20 when we broke a shock mount and that killed our day right then and there. We all feel that there’s unfinished business at Dover. ‘Bono’ [Manion, crew chief] has won there before, I was close to winning there in Nationwide and we had a really good car there in the spring. Hopefully this time we can put everything together and have a good day.”

JOE GIBBS RACING JUMPS INTO CHASE WITH STRONG SHOWING

Kyle Busch

September 19, 2014 – The majority of attention heading into the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup was focused on the drivers from Hendrick Motorsports and Team Penske. And deservedly so. Drivers from those organizations won 13 of the previous 16 regular season races.

But, coming in under the radar, Joe Gibbs Racing made a statement at Chicagoland Sunday.

Its trio of Denny Hamlin, Kyle Busch and Matt Kenseth finished sixth, seventh and 10th. It was only the third time that’s happened this season.

The first time: New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

All that’s left for JGR to assert itself into championship contender talk is for one of its drivers to take a stroll through victory lane – a feat it hasn’t accomplished since Denny Hamlin won at Talladega in May.

After posting a career-high seven victories last year in his first season with JGR, Kenseth has no checkered flags to his credit in 2014. Still, he’s been one of the most consistent drivers in the series, finishing sixth in the regular season point standings (his 17 top 10s rank second only to Jeff Gordon’s 18).

Kyle Busch has experienced an up-and-down season. He notched a quick victory at Auto Club in March and owns three runner-up finishes on the season. Simply put: At New Hampshire, he’s due. He’s finished second the last three races there, with his last win coming 2006.

The New Hampshire race also sets up well for Hamlin. He has three top-10 finishes at Loudon in his last five starts, including a victory, a runner-up and an eighth place showing in July.

LARSON AND VICKERS LOOK TO PLAY SPOILER

September 19, 2014 – Close, but not close enough. That was the story for Kyle Larson over the weekend in Chicagoland.

Kyle Larson

Battling Kevin Harvick for the lead as late as Lap 252, the Sunoco Rookie of the Year frontrunner had a golden opportunity to spoil the first race of the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup. Then, in an instant, Brad Keselowski powered between Larson and Harvick and stayed out front the rest of the way to win the MyAFibStory.com 400.

It’s been a year of “not-quites” for the 22-year-old Larson, who has flashed his unlimited potential with a runner-up and two third-place finishes this season and barely missed making the Chase on points.

The NASCAR Next and NASCAR Drive for Diversity graduate will attempt to capture his elusive first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series victory in Sunday’s Sylvania 300 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway (2 p.m. on ESPN), where he finished third in the circuit’s earlier visit this season. He claims fourth and 14th-place showings in his two NASCAR Nationwide Series appearances at the Magic Mile.

Larson is far from the only spoiler candidate in the second Chase race. Michael Waltrip Racing driver Brian Vickers won at New Hampshire last season and owns five top-10 finishes there.

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Etc.

Clinch Scenarios: Though unlikely, drivers can mathematically clinch a spot in The Contenders Round without a win this weekend. If a Chase driver other than Brad Keselowski wins, anyone who has at least a 45-point lead on the 10th highest winless Chase driver would advance to the next round. If a non-Chase driver or Keselowski wins, the potential clinching driver needs to lead the 11th highest winless Chase driver by at least 45 pts. Conversely, for a driver to be in a must-win situation at Dover, they would have to be 45 points or more behind the 9th ranked winless driver if there’s a Chase winner that’s not Keselowski; or 45 points or more behind the 10th ranked driver if there’s a non-Chase winner or Keselowski. … Corey LaJoie will make his NASCAR Sprint Cup Series debut this weekend. LaJoie, who finished second in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East championship standings in 2012, is the son of two-time NASCAR Nationwide Series champion Randy LaJoie.

CHASERS CAN HELP BREAK RECORD AT NEW HAMPSHIRE

After posting three wins, his highest total since he racked up six in 2004, Earnhardt will try to automatically advance to the Chase’s Contender Round with a New Hampshire checkered flag

September 19, 2014 – Thirteen different drivers have taken the checkered flag in the last 13 races at New Hampshire Motor Speedway – tied with Texas Motor Speedway for the all-time record streak without a repeat winner.

Dale Earnhardt, Jr.

And there’s a better than average chance the Magic Mile takes sole possession of the record after this Sunday’s Sylvania 300 (2 p.m. on ESPN) as Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers Jeff Gordon, Kevin Harvick and Dale Earnhardt Jr. are all missing from the 13-in-13 stretch.

Gordon owns three victories at New Hampshire, but has not won there since 1998. He has been knocking on the door for his fourth win of the season after posting runner-up finishes the last two races. The No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports driver will attempt to improve on his last Loudon showing in July when he finished 26th, but did lead for 19 laps. Despite his Granite State drought, Gordon boasts the highest average running position in the series at the 1.058 oval (7.7) where he has competed in all 39 of its NASCAR Sprint Cup Series events – tied with Jeff Burton for its all-time starts record.

Similar to Gordon, Harvick has one win at New Hampshire, but he notched it eight years ago (September 17, 2006). In his last two races at the track, he has finished 30th and 20th, respectively. Harvick can likely count on a solid starting position, at least. He boasts a series-best six Coors Light Pole Awards on the season and has started lower than sixth once his last eight races, ironically at New Hampshire. The Stewart-Haas Racing driver opened the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup with a fifth-place finish at Chicagoland Speedway.

After posting three wins, his highest total since he racked up six in 2004, Earnhardt will try to automatically advance to the Chase’s Contender Round with a New Hampshire checkered flag. In 30 starts at Loudon, he has seven top fives and 13 tops 10s to his credit, but has never finished higher than third. Since Earnhardt’s emphatic win at Pocono, he has posted one top-10 finish in the last six races, a fifth-place showing at Michigan.

DALE EARNHARDT, JR. SWEEPS POCONO

Fifth Consecutive Win for Chevrolet at the ‘Tricky Triangle’

LONG POND, Pa. – August 04, 2014 – On the final restart with only three laps remaining, Dale Earnhardt, Jr. took the lead in his No. 88 National Guard Chevrolet SS to win the GoBowling.com 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup race, and complete a season sweep at Pocono Raceway.

This was Earnhardt’s third victory of 2014 and 22nd career trip to Victory Lane.  The win marked the fifth consecutive victory at Pocono for Chevrolet and Hendrick Motorsports. It was the first time a driver has swept at Pocono since Denny Hamlin’s pair of wins in 2006. This is also the second time in Earnhardt, Jr.’s career to complete a season track sweep and first since 2002 at Talladega Superspeedway.

Earnhardt was able to hold off a hard-charging Kevin Harvick in the No. 4 Mobil 1 Chevy SS.  Harvick rebounded from a midrace speeding penalty and a multi-car crash to finish second, giving Chevrolet a 1-2 finish at the ‘Tricky Triangle’. Harvick’s runner-up performance also secured him a berth in the final 10-race Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup.

“They (Kevin Harvick) were faster than my car,” said Earnhardt Jr. in Victory Lane. “I was over-driving it; not rolling the center very good and Kevin was getting me in between turns one and two. I couldn’t back-it-down, and I was just way over-driving the car.   I could get him through the tunnel in (Turn) three and I was fine, but man he could come through (Turns) one and two, and I wasn’t driving the car right.   We had a fast car all day.

“Steve’s (Letarte, crew chief) strategy was perfect at the end,” Earnhardt, Jr. continued.  “I don’t know if anybody knew what was going on but that was pretty awesome.  It takes a really, really smart guy to understand what to do to take those gambles.  Sometimes they pay off and sometimes they don’t.  I can’t believe we swept Pocono.  We definitely went home from the last race and made our car better.  So, that is what I am proudest of this team for.  They went back and didn’t sit on what we had, they wanted to get better, faster car so we didn’t have to rely on luck to win.”

Jeff Gordon, who led a race-high 63 of the 160-lap race in his No. 24 Axalta Chevrolet SS finished sixth, and also reached two laps-led milestones: 24,000 career laps led in NASCAR Sprint Cup competition and 1,000 laps led at Pocono Raceway.

Jamie McMurray was seventh in the No. 1 Bad Boy Buggies Chevrolet SS, Ryan Newman was eighth in the No. 31 Quicken Loans Chevy SS, and Kasey Kahne finished 10th in his No. 5 Farmers Insurance Chevrolet SS. To complete a strong contingent of six Chevrolet SS race cars finishing in the top 10.

Rounding out the top five finishing positions were Joey Logano (Ford) in third, Clint Bowyer (Toyota) in fourth, and Greg Biffle (Ford) in fifth.

The series moves next to New York for road course racing at Watkins Glen International on August 10th.
